Also known as pocket irrigation or oral irrigation, this treatment is a type of dental cleaning that can be performed by our dentists in our office or at home using an oral irrigation device. Periodontal irrigation works to remove food, plaque and other debris from between your teeth, cleaning the periodontal pockets so that they remain shallow and free from harmful bacteria. This treatment may also be used to deliver antimicrobials, such as ARESTIN®, below the gum line.
Periodontal irrigation devices use a rounded tip to minimize the risk of tissue damage and facilitate a more thorough cleaning. If you are performing an at-home irrigation, you can use a water jet such as the Waterpik® water flosser to clean around your teeth. Pocket irrigation is also gentler on your gums and less harmful to your soft tissue than regular flossing. Please note, however, that periodontal irrigation does not replace the need for regular brushing and flossing or for routine professional cleanings and exams.
